Plane Hammer Prototype (Pt.2)

I've started to do a prototype of a plane hammer.

Let's see how it is developing.

After doing the head I wanted to make the handle.
My first try went south because I've used a piece of beech which was somehow brittle.
Making a round tenon by paring down went really bad. But practiced the task the second time it went easier.

So I took a rectangular piece and laid out the center of one end. Then I've marked a circle at this center.
I've used the same drill bit which came to task for the center hole in the head.

Laying out the tenon

Next I've laid out some shoulder lines coming in about 40mm from the end.

Tenon rough cut

Then I've cut down the cheeks to the shoulder lines.
And started paring the waste until I got a close to round end.

Paring carefully from square to round

To make the tenon really round I've made a small jig. Nothing more than a piece of ply with a hole in the same dimension as the tenon should be.

"Marking" the final dimension

Pressing in the tenon leaves some bruising. Now I've pared carefully to this lines and repeated the process a few times.

Not nice yet

Finally the tenon came out like this....

Finally it looks ok

And...drum roll.....drdrdrdrdrdr......the tenon fits into the hole.

And it is a real snug fit

Although the head will already be held firmly I will make it stronger by wedging the tenon.

That's how the rough prototype came out. I think I have to switch over to shaping now.
Even I haven't got an idea about the shape yet.

That's all folks!
Stefan

  2. Looking good so far. I'm sure you can find some old hammers and copy the shape for your new hammer.

    1. Hi Matt,
of course for the handle I would do so. I'm not sure where to go with the head.
      Cheers,

  3. Stefan,

Nice clean work. Do a google on genno or Japanese hammer for some ideals for handle shape. Japan Tool (http://www.japan-tool.com/) has a good section on making handles.
