Boxes, Boxes, Boxes

Being much under pressure the week before, I spent most of my woodworking time on the "Autobahn" the last week.

It seems that in November and December the traffic is growing somehow.

I hate these weeks.

There was no day this last week without traffic congestion. Every morning  and every evening.
That ate me reserved shop time this week. I was at home late and when I was at home I didn't find the rest to do woodworking.
Anyway there have been two evenings and a  few hours at the weekend where I have done a little bit.

After the toolbox is (nearly) ready I thought it would be a good idea to come back to my "Secret Project".
It's been a couple of weeks since it have worked on it.
Time to recap were I am. Not so easy to find back into a project after a while.

Last things I have build, have been these two trays.

The last things I've done

I have to build three trays more. But with somewhat different dimensions. I had already prepared most of the stock.
The little time I had the last days I have used to double check the dimensions and to make some grooves into all the small boards.

Material for the missing trays

The material ready I have shot one end square and then brought the piece to the final width on the shooting board.

Shooting pieces to final width

With this small pieces it went well so far, but if my plans for making boxes are developing I should finalize my long grain shooting board.
That done I went over to the miter shooting board and established all needed bevels.

45° bevels at all ends

And here you can see how the missing boxes came out.

3 smaller tills out of 5

Finally these tills will go into the box like this....

A box in a box, in a box

All boxes done it's time for glue up and fitting. That will be my next steps in this project.

And until then I have to think about the life edge for the lid. More about this topic in the next post.

Stay tuned!

  1. Nice 'plug' to the miter shooting board construction. I need to re-do mine.
The small orange square is it a Bahco? and do you recommend it?

    1. Hi António,
yeah. Thought it would fit here pretty well ;-)
And yes, the small square is a Bahco. My experience with them are pretty good. I have got two 150 mm squares and both are accurate. They are pretty solid and sturdy.
The only thing I have to point out is that they have very sharp edges when it comes from the factory. But you can ease the edges with some fine sandpaper.

  2. Was there a gap in one of the mitre joints on the top drawer? Or had the mitred top edges not been planed flushed.

    1. Hi Richard,
      thanks for the question.
No, I haven't planed the top edges flush yet.
I'm usually doing it after glue up.
Additionally the light conditions while making the picture haven't been ideal. So there is some shadow at this edge.
From my point of view all miter joint are tight and I'm lucky with it.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

  3. Nicely done on these boxes. Looks like they fit very well. If you don't mind, I have a question about your miter shooting board. I just re-read those two blog entries. The groove that you plowed for the plane edge to ride in - has that worn down and affected how the plane sits at 45°?

    1. Hi Matt,
      interesting question.
Actually the groove has not worn down.
My groove is that narrow that only a little amount of the plane edge is running in that groove. There is no contact with the blade. For the time being the plane is sitting dead on 45°.
Might be that will change in the future. In that case I can glue in a new plywood shelf and establish a new groove.
Hope that answers yours questions. If you have additional ones then I would be glad if you would drop me a line.

      Cheers,
      Stefan
